Derry Girls' third and final season is rapidly coming to an end but fans of the witty comedy don't have to be sad just yet as Channel 4 has announced a special extra episode.

That means not only will viewers be treated to a whole new episode the same week the finale airs, but it will also have a longer air time of 45 minutes.

Since the show is set to the backdrop of The Troubles in Ireland and Northern Ireland, of course the special will centre around one of the most historic moments – the Good Friday Agreement.

We will return to Derry one year later with the girls preparing for their final year of school as Erin and Orla's joint 18th birthday party is threatened to be overshadowed by the political happenings.

Lisa McGee, writer and creator of Derry Girls, said: "Like all the very best 90s bands, I couldn't resist ending our farewell tour with an encore for our loyal fans.

"The special deals with the historic and momentous Good Friday Agreement vote, which coincides with the gang's coming of age, they enter adulthood just as Northern Ireland embarks on a new future.

"I'm so proud of this show and of our incredible cast and crew and everything we've achieved over the past 5 years. What a journey it's been. I'm so grateful Channel 4 gave me the space to end the stories of these characters that mean so much to me with this special."

The announcement of this extra episode comes after McGee took to Twitter to tell people about the episodes she wished she could have included this season.

S0 far one idea that didn't make the cut was about Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) reimagining a religiously divided Romeo and Juliet play, with the Shakespearean characters picked by class vote.

Derry Girls airs on Tuesday nights at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
