Derry Girls' third and final season is currently underway – and while fans are happy to have Erin, Orla, Clare, Michelle and "the wee English fella" James back on our screens again, it's also safe to say they're finding it hard to cope with the sitcom nearing its end.

Something that may soften the blow, though, is that the show's creator Lisa McGee has started sharing details of some storylines that didn't end up making the final cut.

"In the run up to the end of Derry Girls I want to share some stories that didn't make it," she wrote in a tweet.

What to Read Next

"Number 1: Erin writes a reimagined version of Romeo and Juliet which she thinks is mind blowingly original ( Juliet is a catholic and Romeo is a Protestant). The casting is decided by a class vote. Orla bags the role of Romeo and Erin is horrified when the role of Juliet goes to... Drum roll please Sister… Jenny Joyce…"

McGee added she'd share details of more storylines "in the future when I have time if the fans want to see them".

This left some viewers hopeful that McGee's unseen material could be hinting at more Derry Girls seasons, or even a movie.

One fan tweeted: "Is this a hint at a movie / another season? So much material for more. Last night's episode was sheer class. The Pippa reference had me buckled over laughing."

The prospect of Derry Girls getting a spin-off movie has been the topic of some discussion ahead of the series ending. McGee briefly addressed this possibility when talking to Radio Times last month and said: "Who knows!"

She did, however, go on to explain that although she isn't completely ruling a movie out, she feels that she has taken all the characters "exactly where [she] wanted to take them".

"You never know what will happen in 10 years' time, but as a writer, you just know when it's complete," she added.

Derry Girls airs on Tuesday nights at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
