Fans of Legacies will know that the supernatural drama really isn't afraid to mix things up when it comes to style.
Now in its second season, the CW drama has already set episodes in an alternate reality and in the 1980s – and it's now delving into the world of film noir.
In upcoming episode 'There's a Place Where the Lost Things Go' the characters of Legacies will be forced to confront painful truths in a brand new style, with many of them portraying very different versions of themselves.
And the show's producers have explained exactly why the film noir style was so perfect for this episode's themes.
"Legacies is doing its first and maybe only film noir episode," creator Julie Plec told EW at SCAD aTVfest 2020. "We just wanted to dive into a fantasy world we hadn't done before."
Executive producer Brett Matthews revealed that this episode could have ended up looking very different, as film noir wasn't always the chosen genre.
What to Read Next
"We had the episode broken and we didn't know conceptually what we wanted the world to be," he said. "There were a lot of ideas on the table. There was Western, there was steampunk, there was Victorian.

"Film noir just became the perfect storm of producible and fit the tone of the season and that particular episode."
What's more, the episode's style gave the cast the chance to play different versions of their characters, with Lizzie Saltzman (Jenny Boyd) becoming a movie star and MG (Quincy Fouse) being a detective and the narrator of the episode.
And Danielle Rose Russell, who plays Hope Mikaelson, said she loved the "change of pace" the episode gave them.
"I feel like a lot of our episodes give us the go-ahead to break it up and so we're never feeling super stuck... Oddly, it felt like some of the most grounded stuff we've done because we were talking about real person things."
Legacies airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW in the US.
