Vampire Diaries characters return in Legacies final episode

Legacies finale spoilers follow.

Legacies brought back two major Vampire Diaries stars for its finale on The CW, Thursday night (June 16).

Joesph Morgan reprised his role as Klaus Mikaelson in the episode titled 'Just Don't Be A Stranger, Okay?' while Candice King was back as Caroline Forbes.

Klaus, who is the father of Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), last made an appearance in the Vampire Diaries' universe in the final episodes of The Originals, where he died alongside Elijah.

But Klaus got to deliver one final message to his daughter in the Legacies finale through a projector screen from Peace.

Speaking to TVLine about her on-screen dad's brief return, Russell said: "I wasn’t convinced that [Klaus’ speech] was going to make it into the episode.

"I didn’t think they could pull it off. I was acting to a blank screen, which was fun for me. I did have the little clips of Hope's life playing on repeat, which production set up, but I was mostly acting to a blank projection screen."

The actress went on to reveal that she "bawled" when she finally got to watch a completed version of the scene.

Meanwhile, Caroline Forbes had a larger role in the finale, with the character becoming the school's new interim headmistress following Alaric's departure.

Speaking about making the return of Caroline and actress Candice King happen, series creator Julie Plec said: "As a showrunner, I always wanted Caroline in Legacies.

"As a friend, I wanted Candice to come when she was ready. [Showrunner Brett Matthews] called her and said, 'We don't know for sure, but this could be the end, and here's this thing we want to do with you'. And she said, 'Sign me up'. It was that easy."

And, in perhaps a bittersweet revelation, Plec added that the possibility of King joining the series as a recurring capacity "was meant to be a conversation that Candice and we could have if there was going to be another season".

"I think she was open to the conversation, but we never actually got that far," Plec added.
