Doctor Foster creator Mike Bartlett is developing a spin-off series with The Crown star Victoria Hamilton as its lead.

Fans of the BBC thriller have been calling for a third series ever since the second one came to its conclusion, but it looks like Bartlett is keen to move in an entirely new direction with the characters.

Titled Life, Bartlett confirmed the new show will "share a universe with Doctor Foster".

Via The Sun, the writer explained how Hamilton's character Anna Baker – Gemma Foster's neighbour in the original series – will be at the centre of it all.

"In the last series of Doctor Foster, Anna split up with Neil and moved away. But I loved her as a character and suspected that was really the start of her story, rather than the end," he said.

"In Life we find her living alone, under a different name, in a new city."

Bartlett added: "It's one of four story strands that make up the series, the other three being new, completely different interconnected stories that explore the epic and extraordinary in our everyday lives."

As well as featuring as the Queen Mother, in series 1-2 of The Crown, Hamilton's known for dramas including Lark Rise to Candleford, The Circuit and Cobra.

Life was originally commissioned in March 2019 for six hour-long episodes, with the BBC saying the drama "brings together four separate, deeply human and surprising strands to tell a larger story about what happens when we decide to step out of our own personal space and take a closer look into other people's lives".

Doctor Foster series 1 and 2 are available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
