Sherlock and Fargo star Martin Freeman has spoken out about ITV's upcoming crime drama series The Confession, revealing why it's different from other shows in the genre.
The drama follows the aftermath of 22-year-old Sian O'Callaghan going missing after a night out in Swindon in March 2011, and follows the controversial investigating officer Det Supt Steve Fulcher assigned to the case – played by Freeman.
The show will follow how Fulcher managed to extract a confession from suspect Christopher Halliwell, which was very contentious at the time.

Now, Freeman has revealed what makes this show unique, saying (via The Guardian): "There may be a disproportionate amount of cop stuff, but by sticking close to a true story you avoid cliches."
He also said the story will force people to reflect on how they think they would have acted, as he himself wondered what he would've done in the situation.

"Before you even realise it you are thinking, how would I have acted?" he said. "Certainly this drama makes you wonder if you could have been so brave, because who, with a life at stake, would really wish Halliwell had been given the opportunity to clam up?"
This all sounds so interesting.

Elsewhere, Freeman discussed breaking out of typical roles he could have been cast in, admitting: "When I was 30, I did have a fear of being locked in. I could easily have made a career of just doing lovable schmucks next door."
After playing Watson in the BBC's adaption of Sherlock, he reflected: "Although Watson is an intermittent long-runner, on the whole I have managed to keep moving."
A Confession airs soon on ITV.
