Doctor Foster's future has been up in the air ever since the second series ended all the way back in 2017.

However, while she doesn't know if a third run is actually happening, star Suranne Jones has admitted she would be "frightened" about going back to the character.

"I love Gemma Foster, I love the reaction," she said on today's (May 17) This Morning when Eamonn Holmes asked her about revisiting the BBC series.

"Part of me would be so frightened, that people would be expecting a third. But who knows? Never say never."

Our fingers are certainly crossed.

Suranne last gave an update back in early 2018 and revealed that she would like to see on-screen son Tom return home in series three after his dramatic exit in the finale.

"Obviously I want Tom to come home, for her," she said. "I think it would be nice if they rectified their relationship. I don't know what her and [ex-husband] Simon's relationship would be, but it would be nice for her and Tom to rectify that."

Creator Mike Bartlett previously teased: "That ending of series two leaves a lot open to come back to: where has the son Tom gone and what's happening to him? What happens to the parents? That's the sort of story territory we'd be in, but it's not written yet."

He added: "No-one has ever put pressure on me to make more of it. I think the BBC would rather I did something new, but if we do bring Doctor Foster back it will only thrive if we do it at the right time."
