At a loose end this weekend? Why not grab a rum and coke, pick up your mobile device, and download some of these great apps to keep your idle thumbs busy over the coming week and beyond.
This week's must-have apps include some updated classics and some new masters, including a creative solution for photo storage and a revamped YouTube app with inbuilt video editing tools - get in.
1. YouTube
Available on: iOS, Android
No doubt you'll be well acquainted with YouTube - you probably use it on a regular basis to view movie trailers, cat videos and what not - but you may not be aware of its retooled iPhone app.
Fans aren't too happy with the new layout if the App Store reviews are anything to go by, but the update does add a much-requested feature - editing tools.
They won't bring the cinematic power of Christopher Nolan to the palm of your hand, but you can crop your videos before uploading them, add filters, and back them with a soundtrack - handy.

2. TapTag
Available on: Android
Someone's found a use for augmented reality and it's called TapTag.
This app lets users share photos with strangers by leaving them in the location where they were taken. Simply crack open the in-app camera and you can see what others have left lying round.
It's a real-world treasure hunt that reminds us of the Soapstone messaging feature in the Dark Souls games, which is no bad thing.

3. Inkboard
Available on: Android, iOS
Sometimes the very best apps are the simplest ones, and Inkboard certainly qualifies as that.
It's a quick and easy way to draw on a blank canvas, but it's also handy for adding text to images or doodling over any pictures saved on your device, if you're into that sort of thing.
There's an in-app keyboard for all of your typing needs and a set of basic editing tools.

4. TVPlayer
Available on: iOS, Android
With so many connected devices in our homes, traditional TV viewing is on the decline, but it's nice to be able to take in your favourite broadcast shows without having to fiddle around with on-demand apps every once in a while.
This is where TVPlayer steps in to grant iOS and Android users access to all Freeview channels on their tablet or smartphone via an internet connection.
There are several apps that do this, but TVPlayer also offers a premium service for £5 per month that snags you 25 extra channels and ad-fee playback.

5. Tinder
Available On: iOS, Android
Online dating phenomenon Tinder has introduced an update across all platforms that will change the way you flirt - again.
Make way for Super Likes - you can now let a potential date know just how keen you are without sending an ill-advised crotch-shot. Instead, simply swipe up on their profile, but use it wisely, you only get one Super Like per day.
With swipe left and right already taken, let's hope Tinder isn't reserving swipe down for 'you're repulsive'. That would just be mean-spirited.

6. Chromecast
Available on: Android, Android
Google unveiled some shiny new Chromecast hardware recently, and it's just refreshed the Chromecast app on Android to coincide with their launch.
Android Marshmallow integration is the headline feature, if you're lucky enough to own a device that runs Google's latest OS, but everyone will benefit from the other tweaks.
They include more options for backdrop personalisation, selections of popular content playable on Chromecast-compatible apps, and a new place to find those compatible apps.

It's just had a major update to coincide with the launch of the new, second-generation Microsoft Band, and some of the new features will benefit you regardless of whether or not you're planning on buying the new wearable.
They include in-app UV monitoring, new features for promoting healthy sleep and redesigned navigation. Plus, that pale blue design is much easier on the eye.

8. IceCream
Available On: iOS
If photographs are clogging up the internal storage on your iPhone, IceCream is the tasty solution you're looking for.
This app takes a creative approach to solving the problem of memory-hogging photos by storing the high-resolution version of your camera roll up in the cloud, and replacing the pics stored locally with low-res placeholders.
One of the most delicious things about IceCream is how quickly it transfers your images to and from the cloud, moving them in batches of 20.

9. Adobe Photoshop Fix
Available on: iOS
There are good reasons why Photoshop is a leader in its class but, unless you're a pro, the full-fat service can be daunting to use and convoluted.
That's where Photoshop Fix comes in. It's a stripped-down version of the popular editing software that's perfect for simple edits, like tweaking a selfie. What's more, it's absolutely free.
You have to sign up for an Adobe account to use that app, but that's also free, and no more than a minor inconvenience.

App of the week
IceCream for iOS devices is our app of the week since it is a creative solution to a long-standing problem.
By putting your high resolution photos in the cloud and replacing them on your device with SD placeholders, it frees up storage and lets you keep a version of the original image for reference.
