As the final day of Finn's hearing dawns, Elly prepares to give her damning statement. However Shaun approaches her just hours before she takes the stand. Steadfast in his defence of his brother, he has decided he's willing to stay quiet to help Elly – if she's willing to help Finn.
Elly is appalled, but feels completely trapped. She goes before the judge and shocks her loved ones by delivering a much less vitriolic assessment of Finn than anyone expected. The stunned reactions continue as the judge hands down her decision: Finn will not receive a custodial sentence. Despite everything he has done, Imogen has successfully argued that he's no longer a danger to the community, and no jail time will be served.
Gary and Ned are furious as it's determined that Finn will need to be released, under strict conditions, into supervised housing. But with the halfway houses full, and no family living full-time in Australia, Imogen and Finn fear they'll have trouble finding Finn a new home.
Later, Shaun already has a plan in motion. Though he doesn't want to torment Elly, he sees her as his one hope of keeping Finn from being locked up. Driving his hard bargain, he cites Susan's caring instincts and the soothing influence she has on Finn. Shaun asks Elly to convince the Kennedys to harbour Finn.
Elly is appalled by the notion, but Shaun asserts that if Elly can make this happen, he'll leave Erinsborough and Mark can continue believing he's the father of her child. When Elly reluctantly suggests the idea, Susan supports it but puts the decision to the family to make.
