Xander shines as a paramedic at work, telling Rose that he almost delivered a baby in the ambulance. He's finally getting back into the work groove. Rose is pleased for him, but her joy turns quickly to concern when Xander gets a call that one of his patients died in hospital.

Determined to remain upbeat, Xander insists that he's taking it in his stride. Besides, the woman died of a health condition – it was through no fault of his treatment. But Rose's worries are not easily allayed. She knows what a dark place Xander was in before. He's got the tattoos to prove it.

Meanwhile, Leah takes the reigns on Justin's band fee negotiation and saves the day. Justin is astounded, wondering how she did it. Leah says it's simple - just stand your ground. As Lyrik have gained popularity recently, Leah argues that it's time for them to negotiate an increased fee at Salt. Justin grins – this is the perfect way to prove himself to Lyrik.

Tane misses Ari, wishing that he could talk through his problems with his big brother. Trying to reconnect Tane's lost spirit, Nikau suggests they use the Taiaha, as it helped Nikau the last time he was feeling lost.
