Tane agrees to let Nikau hang for a bit, but Nikau keeps pushing to move in and eventually walks out frustrated. Tane finds out from Ryder how hard it has been for his family – at one point they were living in their car. Seeing how toxic the living situation is, Tane agrees to let Nikau spend the night to cool off.
The next day, a worked-up Ari gets aggressive with Ryder, when he won't tell him where Nikau stayed. Tane and Nikau arrive during this and Ari loses it, pushing Tane and setting up a dangerous confrontation.
Meanwhile, Roo tries to play peacemaker with John and Marilyn, but when John arrives at the Diner, he misinterprets a conversation between Marilyn and Ari, thinking they're intimate. After a heart-to-heart, John realises that Marilyn is just hurting, while Marilyn realises her recent goodwill is appreciated.
Elsewhere, after agreeing to have dinner with Maggie, Ben struggles with her small talk and storms off. Struggling with some type of mystery illness, Ben returns to work and takes a couple of his antidepressants. The next day Ben collapses in front of Maggie, who desperately calls for an ambulance.
