In just a few hours, EastEnders fans will finally know the answer to the question that's been haunting Albert Square for the past ten months - who killed Lucy Beale on Good Friday 2014?

It's the story that everyone has an opinion on, so today we bring you some of Digital Spy's final theories on who could have committed the terrible crime.

It has to be Jane - doesn't it?

Ian Beale's marriages are notoriously tumultuous and often short-lived, so there's no way his nuptials with Jane will go off without a hitch. Back in 2006, the revelation that she'd slept with Grant Mitchell led to a messy showdown in the allotments - but nine years on, is Ian going to uncover a far worse betrayal?

A month or so after Jane's surprise return to EastEnders in January 2014, the 'Who Killed Lucy?' plot was first announced. Mere coincidence or the beginning of Dominic Treadwell-Collins's master-plan?

She certainly fled the Square rather abruptly in the aftermath of Lucy's murder, and in the months since, we've seen multiple instances of either Jane acting strangely - hiding Lucy's phone - or people acting strangely around her - Lauren seemed unnerved by Jane at the Beales' pre-wedding dinner party, shortly after finding out 'how Lucy died'.

The killer reveal has to be, well, a killer reveal - and nothing would take as great a toll on Ian as the woman he loves being unmasked as his daughter's murderer.

And there's more - only one other character has come close to rivalling Ian's uninterrupted 30-year stint on Albert Square; Tracey the barmaid, played by... Jane Slaughter!

JANE. SLAUGHTER. Pretty concrete, right?

Ten months later and I'm still struggling to stick with one name for more than a week. With just hours to go though, I've decided to opt for Peter Beale. It almost feels too obvious, but as an outcome, I really don't think this could be topped.

We know that on Good Friday, Peter overheard Ian's still-odd 'it was always you' speech to Lucy. There was never much love lost between the twins, but hearing that may just have been the final straw.

Then there was the shock reveal that Peter was Lucy's drug dealer. He's convinced Ian and Jane that he only did it so that he could have more control of what she was taking... how convenient, eh?

Personally, I hope that Lucy's death is ultimately revealed as being a tragic accident that occurred after a series of several events - leaving a number of characters indirectly involved (ie: the Abi reveal), with Peter the final named 'killer'.

Ben Hardy's exit may be throwing me slightly, but Ian sending his son away from Albert Square, while not telling the police the truth, would be a satisfying and emotional climax.

Now we just need Dot to join the fun and agree to pin the blame on Nick so that the police can close the case.

Although she appears to have taken a back seat in the storyline since it began last year, several things about Lucy's younger sister seem a bit suspicious.

As well as showing some jealousy towards Lucy in her final days, the biggest clue linking Cindy to the death is the all-important jewellery box. We know that the music from the box was the last thing Lucy ever heard, and casting our minds right back to before the murder, it was Cindy who originally knew that Lucy harboured her drugs in there. On Christmas Day, the music box was planted under the tree for Cindy to open and she was seen with it again on Tuesday night's episode.

Other indicators include the voicemail from Cindy that was played as Lucy's body was lying on the Walford Common, her candidly revealing Lucy's drug habit to the police, and her later telling DC Summerhayes that she can 'feel' Lucy around.

Cindy doesn't come across as a cold-blooded killer, but could Lucy have possibly met her fatal end after her sibling hit her in a fit of rage?

Bobby hasn't been included in the main suspects lists, but Dominic Treadwell-Collins recently hinted that it could still be anyone who killed Lucy.

The youngest Beale has recently climbed the betting ranks, and it's not a bad shout. Jane has appeared shifty in recent episodes and trailers, but it would be far too obvious if she turned out to be the killer.

It would make much more sense if she was aware of who really killed Lucy and that she is covering up for them. There is only one person she would go to these lengths for, and that is her adoptive son Bobby.

Jane clearly knows something about the murder, and perhaps the only reason she has returned to marry Ian, a man she couldn't stand that long ago, is so that she can remain close to Bobby, who may be following his 'evil' older brother Steven?

When Bobby returned to the Square last year with Jane, he was getting into scrapes and clearly having a tough time. Maybe this is because he is struggling to cope with what he has done? Bobby might not necessarily have a motive for killing his older sister other than jealousy, but maybe it was all one big accident that Jane helped cover up?

Lola Pearce - Daniel Kilkelly, Soaps Editor

It's all gone quiet for Lola in recent months, so it's easy to forget that she still had a strong link to the Beales on Good Friday 2014. Lola was in a relationship with Peter at the time of the murder but she was always slightly insecure over their romance as she never felt like she was good enough for him.

Lola was listed among the original suspects in the storyline and was one of the characters to get an official BBC alibi video, in which she stated that she stayed home with Lexi all night on Good Friday. However, this was later shown to be false as she was with Fatboy when he was filmed doing impressions of Jay while hanging out on the Square - although nobody on screen has ever questioned the discrepancy. Lola's alibi video also revealed that she resented Lucy, feeling that Peter cared more for his twin than her.

It's also suspicious that EastEnders' crafty bosses have since tried their best to show that Lola wasn't Lucy's killer, as she was one of the few characters to seemingly be 'ruled out' in the New Year's Day episode. Lola was leaving for Ronnie's wedding at the time that Emma Summerhayes met up with the killer, but there could well be some trickery here. There's still the possibility that Emma wasn't entirely on the right track and met with someone who was trying to cover for the culprit rather than the murderer themselves.

Lola's involvement would bring in a number of the remaining official suspects who have been acting strangely and may have decided to cover for her - especially Ben and Jay. Actress Danielle Harold also did a fantastic job with Lola's live birth scenes in the EastEnders Olympic torch special, so if there's anyone who can be trusted to pull off a live killer reveal, it's her!
