Coronation Street star Sam Aston has spoken about Gemma Winter's (Dolly-Rose Campbell) current postnatal depression storyline.

Gemma has been seen struggling lately with her mental health following the birth of her and Chesney's quadruplets.

Speaking on today's (April 15) This Morning, Sam explained where things stand, admitting that his character Chesney is somewhat blind to the "severity" of the situation.

"It's been great to be a part of it," he said. "It's been a privilege to be a part of such a strong and poignant story.

"From Dolly's perspective, she did [get advice]," Sam continued. "As far as my character, I was a bit more... not totally blind to it, but I think he was concentrating more on trying to provide for the quads, for Gemma.

"So he's going off to work, and I don't think he sees the severity of it, how much she's struggling. So from Chesney's point-of-view, he's doing what he needed to do to provide."

Presenter Ruth Langsford then noted how Gemma feels shame over it, Eamonn Holmes suggesting this storyline also highlights what men go through too.

"This is it, it's a huge thing, it's a very real problem," Sam said. "But if you can, the biggest is opening up and trying to talk to your loved one or partner, and just admitting that you're struggling and not coping. Even if you feel shameful.

"There's a lot of people out there, and sometimes you feel isolated, like you're the only one.

"This is Gemma's case, she feels like she should love her children, and she's having these horrible thoughts and she doesn't know how to deal with it. But she made a big step in admitting she's not coping."

Coronation Street now airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm on ITV. This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am, also on ITV.
