Coronation Street's biggest reveal of the year is now just two days away – who sabotaged the Underworld roof and inadvertently killed Rana Habeeb?

The ITV soap's dramatic 9pm week will conclude this Friday (May 31) as the identity of the mystery villain is finally revealed to viewers, although the Street's hapless residents will be staying in the dark for a while longer.

Here, we're taking a final look at the suspects in the mix and the biggest clues to their guilt or innocence.

1. Nick Tilsley

ITV

Status: Official suspect

Corrie has spent several months hammering home the fact that golden boy Nick is now a changed man, which has kept him as the prime suspect in the Underworld mystery throughout. Nick unleashed his ruthless streak at the start of the year by shamelessly stealing £80,000 from his gran Audrey, showing that he's capable of some dastardly deeds.

Nick also had a motive for wanting to ruin the factory, with his messy financial situation making him more likely to be tempted by the idea of an insurance job. The stolen health and safety report into the disaster was also conveniently found underneath his mattress, although he claimed it had been planted there. Hmm.

What to Read Next

With the evidence stacking up, it'd be no surprise to see Nick unveiled as the culprit. Our only slight niggle is whether it's just too obvious...

2. Gary Windass

Gary Windass in Coronation Street
ITV

Status: Official suspect

Gary's dire financial situation has pushed him to breaking point this year and we've seen the show explore how far he'll go to get things back on track.

Telling lies to gullible customers about the building repairs they supposedly needed wasn't his finest hour. Things didn't get much better when he found himself forced to do the dirty work of loan shark Rick Neelan.

As Gary was involved in the initial half-hearted attempt to fix the factory roof and couldn't convince Carla to pay him for a more extensive repair job, it's possible that he decided to make the damage worse to force her hand and keep himself in work. Has he been secretly living with the guilt ever since?

3. Robert Preston

Tristan Gemmill as Robert Preston in Coronation Street
ITV

Status: Official suspect

Robert is the final character still on Corrie's official suspects list. He was brimming with resentment towards Carla around the time of the roof collapse, unfairly (and somewhat randomly) blaming her for the breakdown of his relationship with Michelle. He also made himself scarce straight after the disaster, which looked pretty suspicious too.

Robert has clearly been hiding something since returning to the cobbles after his brief break, although some of this could relate to his rumoured secret relationship with Vicky Jefferies.

We know that Tristan Gemmill, who plays Robert, is leaving the soap this year – so transforming into a supervillain for his final months on screen would certainly make for an interesting exit storyline. Would this be a letdown after so much hype over a new "long-term" villain for the show, though?

4. Carla Connor

Carla Connor's special mental health episode in Coronation Street
ITV

Status: Forgotten suspect

Carla was on Corrie's initial list of six suspects for the factory roof collapse in March, but she didn't feature on the "final three" list that was released more recently. This could be a classic Corrie red herring to throw us off the right track, as soaps are prone to clever trickery when it comes to their big whodunits.

Carla is central to Friday's episode, which features the big reveal of the culprit, so we wouldn't totally discount the possibility that her recent breakdown has been brought on by guilt after carrying out an insurance job. It would arguably detract from the sensitive mental health storyline that the show is trying to tell, though.

This would also potentially be another letdown, with Carla due to disappear from screens imminently as she heads off to recover in Carlisle.

5. Peter Barlow

ITV

Status: Forgotten suspect

Peter is another 'original' suspect who mysteriously disappeared from the updated list, but as with Carla, we can't rule out the possibility that Corrie are playing tricks with us.

Although Peter is totally committed to Carla and their future at the moment, things were a little different between them on the day of the collapse. Carla had rejected his advances again and Chris Gascoyne – who plays Peter – suggested that his character could potentially have taken his frustrations out on her beloved factory.

Peter being unmasked as the roof saboteur would certainly provide the shock factor for Corrie, but it'd also potentially ruin the popular 'Carter' ship forever if viewers discovered that he'd spent weeks letting poor Carla take the blame for everything.

6. Seb Franklin

Seb Franklin gets annoyed with Eileen Grimshaw and Jan in Coronation Street
ITV

Status: Forgotten suspect

Corrie put Seb on its first official suspects list at the time of the Underworld roof collapse, pointing out that his feud with Gary gave him a motive to cause trouble for the builder by secretly sabotaging his work.

Seb didn't appear on the updated list that was released last week, which was no real surprise as he has barely featured in the storyline for the past two months and hasn't even shown the vaguest of interests in the roof drama during that time. Surely he'd be showing some emotional turmoil if he had a guilty conscience?

Seb will also be playing the hero in an upcoming storyline as he tries to rescue Alina from her modern slavery ordeal, so whether he'll have the time to become Corrie's next supervillain at the same time is questionable – even with six episodes a week to fill.

7. Adam Barlow

Embargo 17/1 Adam tries to access Johnny's computer in Coronation Street
ITV

Status: Outsider

Adam hasn't been named on either of Corrie's two suspects lists, but he does have a motive if you cast your minds back far enough. When Adam first returned to the Street, one of his early storylines saw him fighting the Connor family for the factory. He later teamed up with Eva Price for her vengeful plan to bring the business to its knees.

As the son of Corrie legend Mike Baldwin, Adam has a personal connection to the factory and it's possible that he's been playing the (very) long game to seize control.

One small problem – Adam was actually away from the cobbles at the time of the roof collapse, but anyone who's read an Agatha Christie novel will know how the seemingly-perfect alibi isn't always all it's cracked up to be.

8. Wayne Hayes

ITV

Status: Outsider

Is there something about Wayne? Ever since Roy and Hayley's former foster child returned to the cobbles, Corrie fans have been slightly suspicious of him. Wayne arrived in Weatherfield to investigate the roof collapse in his capacity as a health and safety inspector, but certain scenes in his early episodes suggested that he was a little too eager to blame Carla Connor for everything.

While there's seemingly no realistic motive for Wayne to mess around with the factory roof (surely he wouldn't have done it just to keep himself in work, or get close to Roy again?), he's definitely a character we have our eyes on.

9. Rick Neelan

ITV

Status: Outsider

Could Corrie's new supervillain have been someone obvious all along? While we've been busy speculating about which good guy has turned bad, a less messy route for the writers could be to simply blame returning rogue Rick Neelan for everything.

Former Hollyoaks star Greg Wood plays the baddie excellently and the show has even gone to the effort of building him his own lair (okay, it's an office set) to beat people up in. Could this be a clue that Corrie bosses want to keep Rick around as a long-term villain? Maybe he hoped to ruin Nick and Carla in the hope they'd take out a loan from him? Stranger things have happened in the soap world.

Coronation Street airs at 9pm all this week on ITV.
