Coronation Street's new boss Iain MacLeod has confirmed rumours of a teen pregnancy storyline for Amy Barlow.

Reports that Amy (Elle Mulvaney) would get pregnant in 2019 have been circulating for a few days, but the show hadn't officially responded to the claims until now.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a Corrie press event, MacLeod promised to explore a mix of emotional and humorous moments as the big new plot plays out.

The story won't just have a big impact on Amy, but also her parents Steve (Simon Gregson) and Tracy (Kate Ford) as they try to come to terms with what's happened.

MacLeod explained: "The story becomes more than being just about a teenage pregnancy. It becomes about family and Steve and Tracy's relationship – it forces them to instantly grow up and be parents for the first time in history.

"It’s really good – it gives a leading role to Elle Mulvaney, who deserves the chance to step up and do something a bit more grown up. I’m very much looking forward to that.

"It’s also really funny. Steve and Tracy dealing with a teenage pregnancy is not like a normal couple dealing with a teen pregnancy! There are scenes reminiscent of Peter Griffin in Family Guy – Steve goes fully postal at certain times.

"It's very funny, classic Steve with that Corrie heart. It's heartbreaking but ridiculous at the same time."

Last week, tabloid reports revealed that gang leader Tyler Jefferies – who tormented Simon Barlow this year – will be the father of Amy's child.
