Prince William and Kate Middleton have become parents to a baby boy, weighing 8lbs 6oz.

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to the royal couple's first child at St Mary's Hospital in London at 4.24pm on Monday, July 22, after going into labour this morning.

The official announcement was given by press release prior to being displayed at the gates of Buckingham Palace.

The subsequent framed notice, put on an easel at Buckingham Palace, did not disclose any name for the child.

The baby was delivered by the Queen's former gynaecologist Marcus Setchell and the couple's loved ones - including senior royals and the Middleton family - were told of the birth prior to the public announcement.

Clarence House has confirmed that the Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth, and that the Duchess of Cambridge is doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.

The new arrival - bestowed with the title of the Prince of Cambridge - replaces Prince Harry as third in line to the throne and, barring unforeseen circumstances, will one day be crowned king.

Royal officials have confirmed that the Duke and Duchess decided not to find out the sex of their child prior to the birth.

Middleton was long speculated to be having a daughter after making an apparent slip-up at a public engagement in March.

She made her final official public appearance before giving birth at the Trooping the Colour parade on June 15 celebrating the Queen's official birthday.

Speaking to Digital Spy in July, Prince Andrew's former wife Sarah Ferguson - mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie - said that Catherine's pregnancy had been a "very exciting" time for the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess announced they were expecting a baby in December after Middleton was hospitalised for severe morning sickness.

The early days of her pregnancy were further blighted by the death of Jacintha Saldanha, a nurse at the King Edward VII hospital, where Middleton was admitted.

She apparently committed suicide days after taking a prank call from two Australian radio DJs posing as the Queen and Prince Charles, which allowed minor details of Middleton's condition to be leaked.

Prince William and Middleton were married in Westminster Abbey in April 2011.
