One Direction fans have largely supported Zayn Malik's decision to quit the group.
Oxford University analysed tweets surrounding news of the singer's departure, finding that 69% of fans expressed positive sentiments towards Malik.
"The degree of positivity reflects the mixed emotions that people often experience in similar 'loss situations'," Oxford University's Dr Karo Moilanen explained.
"Despite Malik's shocking departure that caused obvious shock and sadness, his fans still love him dearly."
The 22-year-old generated over 3 million tweets after confirming his departure from One Direction, TheySay data reveals.
Yesterday, Malik announced his decision to leave the group after five years and four albums.

"I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight," the singer explained.
