Marvel's Chris Pratt might have fought Thanos, but he faces an entirely different threat in the first trailer for The Tomorrow War.

The epic new sci-fi movie sees Pratt play Dan Forester, a high school teacher and military veteran who's recruited to travel to the future and fight for all mankind against a deadly alien species.

Following on from last month's teaser, the new trailer gives more context to Dan's family life, revealing that even though he can turn down the assignment, it would mean his wife (Betty Gilpin) having to go instead.

"I'm just trying to save my daughter. If I've gotta save the world to save her, then I'm going to do it," he says.

Dan's not alone in the fight though as he teams up with brilliant scientist Vicki Winslow (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father Slade (JK Simmons) in the future battle, taking place in the year 2051.

The stakes are high, as they're told that in 11 months' time "all human beings in the future will be wiped from the face of the Earth", with Vicki adding: "This is the end... We're literally living on borrowed time."

While it seems dark, there are hints that the movie will see Pratt's character being a bit more Star-Lord in his approach to the situation, such as when he's getting fitted with the time travel device and attempts a joke: "You don't have jokes in the future?"

It was revealed last month that The Tomorrow War would be skipping cinemas for an Amazon Prime Video release on July 2, when it will launch in more than 240 countries and territories.

Even on the small screen, it looks like the movie will deliver blockbuster-sized action based on this full trailer, which ends with a tense stairwell sequence as we get our first glimpse of the deadly aliens.

Will humanity survive? We don't have too much longer to wait.

The Tomorrow War will be released on Amazon Prime Video on July 2.
