Speaking to Digital Spy and other reporters after his win, Redmayne extended his gratitude to Hawking and his family for their co-operation on The Theory of Everything.

"It's a scary thing having your life put out in the world on film," he said. "I'm one of those people who, when they see a film, I believe it to be absolutely true."

Redmayne continued: "So, trusting people to take your life knowing that things are going to shift and change in the process shouldn't be taken lightly - but they have been so kind."

Professor Hawking was in attendance for the 68th British Academy Film Awards to see Redmayne triumph in the Best Actor category.

Redmayne was also asked if winning a BAFTA Award will impact the kinds of roles that he chooses in the future.

"No, I try to just put one foot in front of the other really," he replied. "I'm starting work [the day after tomorrow] on a new film called The Danish Girl and it's another extraordinary story about extraordinary people."

The actor went on to say: "I feel like every job I've always done, I've always poured my heart and soul into. Some of them are great scripts that end up being awful films, some of them are awful scripts that end up being okay. Sometimes they connect with an audience, sometimes they don't.

"There's a kind of alchemy that happens with filmmaking that you can't control and so all I can do is just keep pouring everything in and see what happens [on] the other side."

Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and JK Simmons were among the major winners at Sunday's ceremony.
