Ever since it was confirmed that King Kong and Godzilla are now existing in a shared cinematic universe, fans have been questioning how much overlap there will be between films featuring them.

With Godzilla: King of the Monsters having dropped its first epic trailer during San Diego Comic-Con, there weren't any obvious direct links between it and last year's Kong: Skull Island beyond the knowledge that they exist in the same universe.

But Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty has revealed in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes that fans WILL see a familiar face in the movie.

"We do bring back one character from Kong: Skull Island," he confirmed, although he wouldn't be drawn on who is returning.

In terms of which characters from Skull Island could possibly return, James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston), Mason Weaver (Brie Larson), Houston Brooks (Corey Hawkins) and San (Tian Jing) are all possibilities.

Although there's always a chance that Dougherty is throwing a curveball and that one of these characters will appear but as an older version played by a different actor.

What to Read Next

We might end up having to wait until Godzilla: King of the Monsters is released on May 31, 2019, to find out the truth unfortunately.

In the meantime there's still that very exciting trailer to play on repeat, which sees monster catcher Dr Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) and her daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) kidnapped and delivered to Godzilla and his fellow Titans, Mothra and Rodan.

Not only that but Godzilla will be squaring off with his nemesis King Ghidorah, a three-headed lizard who we get a shadowy glimpse of in the trailer.

Dougherty has also revealed that Godzilla will have "at least twice the screen time" in this movie in comparison to its predecessor, 2014's Godzilla, so you'll be getting a lot more monster for your money.

And of course there'll be even more of a link being formed between the films in 2020, as Godzilla and King Kong will be brought together in the aptly titled Godzilla vs Kong, which is due to start filming later this year.
