Warning: Contains MAJOR spoilers for Solo: A Star Wars Story

Solo: A Star Wars Story drops us into a world of organised crime and shady goings-on previously only glimpsed in the hit movies.

It gives us some context about Han's past – such as exactly how he won the Millennium Falcon and what went down on the famous Kessel Run – but it also leaves us with some questions about his world and the other stories that may be told in the future. Here are the biggest.

1. What happened to Qi'ra after Han left Corellia?

One of the biggest mysteries in Solo is exactly what happened to Qi'ra after she's separated from Han when he manages to escape Corellia. When we next meet her, she's working for Paul Bettany's Dryden Vos. When Han asks her how she escaped, Corellia says "I didn't".

Then at a number of other points, she says she has done terrible things, suggesting she's not the same person anymore. But what? What things? What happened to her to make her feel like she's unable to separate herself from Vos and later that other surprise villain? One for the sequels, perhaps.

2. What was the deal with Enfys Nest?

One of the movie's big reveals was who was behind Enfys Nest's mask. We knew Nest was a woman but we didn't know who, leading to a bit of speculation about whether it could be a familiar face, or even a double cross from Qi'ra herself.

What to Read Next

Turns out, it's not: Nest is a completely new character. The surprise of the reveal was that Nest isn't a pirate and a marauder at all, but in fact a young woman who is rebelling against the empire. She steals the precious hyperfuel from Beckett and Han to stop it from going to the evil Empire.

Enfys mentions that she's taken over the mantle and mask from her mother, but we're not told who her mother is. We'd wondered briefly if she might turn out to be the daughter of Thandie Newton's Val and Woody Harrelson's Beckett, but the movie didn't appear to go that way and the fate of Beckett suggests that won't be a reveal in a possible sequel either.

3. Why isn't Qi'ra in the later movies?

The obvious answer of course is because the character didn't exist. But that's not what we mean. Given that Qi'ra isn't in the later movies but makes it out alive at the end of Solo: A Star Wars Story, we're left wondering how her character will be handled.

Emilia Clarke has revealed she's signed up for multiple Star Wars movies – more on that in a minute – and her character's arc definitely hasn't been completed. We know Han doesn't end up with her, too, so will she turn to the dark side? Or has she already? Will they kill her off, or will she disappear deep into the galaxy far, far away? We'll have to wait and see how Solo: A Star Wars Story does to find out whether it'll get a sequel to answer those questions.

4. Will there be a sequel and if so, what could it involve?

Emilia Clarke is signed on for several movies, so is Alden Ehrenreich – he's signed up for three – so we'd imagine if Solo is a success this will become a trilogy, and the first film, while still feeling like a complete movie in its own right, certainly did have the whiff of the beginning of an arc. Plus those Star Wars people love a trilogy. They're obsessed.

We'd expect it to tell Han and Qi'ra's arc then, revealing what happened to her in the three years since Han left, and detailing their inevitable separation. Enfys could be back too – we'd hope to learn more about her family.

Solo is set ten years before A New Hope (and Rogue One leads into A New Hope directly), and it's set after Revenge of the Sith. So it's likely this trilogy will lead into the establishment of the Rebellion – perhaps dovetailing with the events of the Star Wars Rebels series in some way. There's an implication that Enfys and her band of allies opposing the 'Five Syndicates' who are controlling all the fuel and wealth will turn out to be proto-rebels.

5. What is Darth Maul up to?

Star Wars fans who haven't delved into the animated series might be surprised that Darth Maul is still up and about after his brutal dissecting by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. He survived – and his path has now almost-sort-of crossed with our young Han Solo.

His main narrative since his return has been taking revenge against his former master, Darth Sidious (aka Emperor Palpatine) and learning the secrets of the Sith. Could his command of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate be a means of getting back at the Empire? And how can Qi'ra help him do this?

6. Why do people still play Sabacc with Lando?

The guy totally cheats at this gambling game. It's how he won the Millennium Falcon, in fact. But even if the other players don't realise he's cheating, which presumably they don't, you'd still think they might hesitate before sitting down at the table with someone apparently so lucky and/or brilliant at the game. Maybe he's a smart cookie and throws enough hands to keep them coming back.

7. Who, or what, is the Foul Lady Proxima?

A reject from The Dark Crystal, obviously. She should have invested in stronger window glass.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is out now in the UK and will be released on May 25 in the US. Book tickets here.
