Patrick Stewart has confirmed that he will appear in Wolverine 3, calling it the "worst kept secret".

The actor had been heavily rumoured to be returning as Professor Xavier in the final spinoff outing for Hugh Jackman's clawed mutant.

Stewart wrote on Twitter: "Worst kept secret. #ProfessorX #Wolverine3".

Producer Hutch Parker also confirmed Stewart's appearance in an interview with Collider, with Simon Kinberg teasing his appearance earlier this week.

Stewart himself suggested he would appear last year, telling Collider: "I understand that Professor Xavier will be making more than an appearance, however, and that intrigues me."

The final outing for Wolverine will apparently be inspired by Mark Millar's Old Man Logan series, and may have a "Western tone".
