We've had a night to sleep on it and let ourselves calm down from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer fever.

And we have questions. Maybe questions. Here's what we're dying to find out about Gareth Edwards' Star Wars prequel/spinoff:

1. Where is Mads Mikkelsen?

Most of our key cast members are present and accounted for, but where's Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen? The answer to that might tie into our next question...

2. Who is the figure in black?

Darth Vader? The Emperor? His hooded getup says that he probably isn't Vader, and who would Palpatine ever kneel to? Could this be Mads? And might it even be an original character?

3. Who is Forest Whitaker playing?

We're getting a distinct bounty hunter vibe from Whitaker's character, but whose side is he even on? It's heavily implied that he's talking to Felicity Jones's hero Jyn, but he's a bit doom-and-gloom for a Rebel. Is he some sort of neutral party with Yoda/Maz Kanata expositional powers?

4. Where is the Rebel base?

The base where Jyn meets Mon Mothma (which later comes under attack) could be on the jungle moon Yavin 4 – which is where the climax of A New Hope took place. And as it was a secret from the Empire before, could that mean Rogue One runs concurrent with the original Star Wars film up until the destruction of the first Death Star?

5. Is Ben Mendelsohn playing Grand Moff Tarkin?

He's a bit younger, but the insignia is definitely the same as Peter Cushing's New Hope villain. But that light (and highly impractical) shade of grey and the snazzy cloak (also impractical) haven't been seen before.

6. Does Jyn really join the Empire?

That final shot! What could it mean? Does Jyn turn? Was she always a spy? Is Disney jumping on the spoilerific trailer bandwagon? We like to think a bit better of the minds behind Star Wars – so what surprises could bring Jyn to put on that uniform?

7. Is Jyn really Rey's mother or are we just crazy?

We weren't the only ones to jump immediately onto this parallel, but are we just being tricked by the cut-glass English accents and the novelty of young female action heroes in the Star Wars universe? Still, if we're sticking with the 'Luke is Rey's father' theory, she still needs a mum...

8. Is Rogue One drawing from the defunct Star Wars Extended Universe?

Despite the consignment of decades of Star Wars Extended Universe (EU) stories to the dustbin after Disney bought Lucasfilm, we've heard that the official line is that they're "not off-limits" when it comes to inspiring the new films. Ask any die-hard fan and they'll tell you that Kylo Ren was 100% based on Jacen Solo.

Looking for possible parallels in Rogue One, could Diego Luna's broody hero be anything like his lookalike Kyle Katarn (who incidentally helped steal the Death Star plans in the EU stories)? And if Jyn is an Imperial agent and Luke's squeeze, well there's this lady called Mara Jade who we're still in double mourning for. Murdered and erased from existence forever *sob*.
