JJ Abrams declined to comment yesterday on who will play a young Han Solo in the Star Wars space smuggler's upcoming spin-off film  – but did offer some advice to whoever gets the gig.

Ansel Elgort and Whiplash star Miles Teller are among those reportedly in the frame to play the character in a 2018 prequel movie, directed by 21 Jump Street pair Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

"I wish I had something to say, but I don't," the Episode 7 director told press at a Television Critics Association event, insisting he hadn't "turned my attention" to the reported shortlist of stars in contention for the role that surfaced online this week.

Asked what tips he'd give to whoever fills Harrison Ford's shoes as Solo, Abrams' answer was simple – dig out your Indiana Jones box-set.

"Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark," he said. "It'll all be right there."

Sounds like solid advice to us – Han was basically a rougher, rogue version of the archeologist when he first appeared on screens, gunning down Greedo in the Mos Eisley cantina in 1977's A New Hope. Sure, he didn't have a deathly fear of snakes, but Solo's wisecracking charm was pure Indy.

It's rumoured there's a race on at Disney headquarters to confirm their new Han Solo now, so that he can make a cameo in Rogue One, Gareth Edwards' prequel set before A New Hope due to land in cinemas on December 15.

We're of course excited for all the Star Wars films in the pipeline, but the Han Solo prequel in particular? GNRNGHHHHHH!

(That's wookie for "Bring. It. On.")

The Han Solo Star Wars Anthology film is released on May 25, 2018.
