Superhero movies may be an increasingly visible part of the Hollywood landscape, but actor Nicholas Hoult finds some of them hard to swallow.

The Mad Max actor - who admittedly is known in part for his role as Beast in the X-Men film series - has complained about the ubiquity of middle-of-the-road comic book adaptations.

"At times I'll see superhero movies and admittedly be frustrated by them," he told NME. "It does feel like some are just packaging and they're not trying hard enough because they know it's a bankable formula."

Of course this doesn't extend to Fox's X-Men franchise.

"I love the X-Men films because they have a heart to them and you have actors like Michael Fassbender, who brings so much to the characters," he said.

"The superheroes in that world aren't smug. You don't want to watch someone who you know is going to win from the start just being awesome for two hours."

The actor played Hank McCoy - aka Beast - in 2011's X-Men: First Class and its 2014 follow-up Days of Future Past. He'll be back in the blue furry suit next year for X-Men: Apocalypse.

Hoult's latest film is Kill Your Friends, a '90s music industry black comedy, also featuring James Corden, Tom Riley, Georgia King, Ed Skrein and Moritz Bleibtreu, which opens today (November 6).

X-Men: Apocalypse will arrive in UK cinemas on May 19, 2016, and in the US on May 27.
