Scream (1996)
The movie that started the classic slasher franchise, the original Scream was first released back in 1996 to huge acclaim, becoming a huge pop culture phenomenon.
From the iconic Drew Barrymore opening scene, it was clear that the Wes Craven movie was something special, as a group of high school students are targeted by the masked Ghostface.
The series has since been rebooted with a new set of movies, but if you want to catch the original – which was described as "a howling great time" by the Toronto Star – you can stream it now on iPlayer alongside its two follow-ups.

Easy A
This underrated 2010 comedy was Emma Stone's first lead movie role, starring as a high school student who tells a lie about losing her virginity, only for it to be spread around campus.
Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Easy A drew acclaim with an 85% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, them. suggesting it was "a timeless teen classic worth its weight of scarlet letters stretched across your chest".
Stone, who has gone on to win two Oscars over the past decade, earned a Golden Globe nomination for her turn as Olive, while other major stars in the movie include Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow and Stanley Tucci.
Clemency
Clemency follows a prison warden (Alfre Woodard) who must confront the psychological toll of her job as she prepares to execute another inmate.
Released in 2019, Chinonye Chukwu's (Till) movie drew huge acclaim, particularly for Woodard's performance, which earned the star a BAFTA nomination.
Sitting at a 92% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was called a "masterwork" by The Spectator, and "proof of just how effortlessly [Woodard] can lead a film", according to The Independent.
Sound of Metal
Another acclaimed movie from 2019, Riz Ahmed's Sound of Metal centres on a metal drummer who starts to experience hearing loss as he deals with the huge implications for his life.
Earning a near-perfect 97% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, The Observer said the film "deserves to be seen by the widest possible audience" and reminds of "cinema's unique ability to challenge, entertain, uplift and unite".
Winner of two Academy Awards, the movie also features performances by Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci.
Tár
Cate Blanchett earned huge acclaim and an Oscar nomination for her performance in Todd Field's Tár, playing a fictional composer and conductor who is accused of misconduct. The tense psychological thriller follows her as her life starts to fall apart.
Exploring themes such as power dynamics and fame, this 91%-rated movie was called a "cut above in terms of style, performance, and ideas" by iNews, and a "phenomenal picture" by The Observer.
