Brie Larson has confirmed that she will be starring in the upcoming Kong: Skull Island, following reports that the actress was in talks for the female lead role.

The Short Term 12 star shared the news on her Twitter page on Saturday (August 8), along with a picture of an invitation from King Kong himself.

While Larson excitedly commented "here we go!" when revealing her news, the message from King Kong was a little more cryptic, reading: "Brie, welcome to the jungle. Love, King Kong."

Larson joins previously-cast Tom Hiddleston in the film, and the actor responded to the announcement with a tweet of his own to welcome the actress to the cast.

Larson's casting comes after Whiplash star JK Simmons and Michael Keaton both revealed they were leaving the project last month.

Among the actors reportedly in the running to replace them are Russell Crowe, Samuel L Jackson and John C Reilly.

The Kings of Summer's Jordan Vogt-Roberts will direct the film, with the producing team behind 2014's Godzilla also on board.

Kong: Skull Island is due for release March 10, 2017.
