Saw XI has reportedly been cancelled ahead of its proposed September release, with fans left devastated at the franchise’s uncertain future.

The horror series was due to return later this year with its 11th instalment, with the newest film set to follow on from highly successful Saw X, which itself was set between the first two entries in the franchise.

That plan seems to have been scuppered however, with Bloody Disgusting reporting that the upcoming film has been cancelled completely, with studio-level disagreements contributing to its demise.

As per the report, tension reportedly arose in January 2024 regarding the direction of the franchise, with a source saying the project has been “totally, 100% dead” for “almost a year” after Lionsgate were unable to “smooth” things over.

The news has understandably come as a shock to fans, with several taking to social media to express their disappointment at the franchise seemingly coming to an end, with one writing on X: “Damn I was curious to see where the next one would take place.”

“Booooo. Saw X would be a pretty solid ending for the franchise though!” wrote a third fan, with a fourth expressing their disappointment as they wrote: Damn that sucks! Many things they could [have done] after Saw X.”

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, however, with one fan retaining some hope as they wrote: “This sounds more like a temporary setback. I imagine we'll still be seeing Saw XI within the next 16 months. Wrap up the storylines. Then after that, it's time for a fresh take on the franchise.”

Saw XI was set to retain some continuity from its predecessor, with Kevin Greutert set to return the director’s chair as Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith and Costas Mandylor were all expected to reprise their respective roles.
