Elf star Mark Acheson has revealed that producers wanted to "axe" the film's classic mailroom scene.
The 2003 festive comedy follows Buddy (Will Ferrell), a human raised by Santa's elves in the North Pole. After learning about his origins, he heads to New York City to meet his biological father Walter (James Caan) – who happens to be on the naughty list.
Acheson played a postal worker who meets Buddy when is he sent to work in the mailroom at his dad's job. The duo instantly hit it off, sharing "syrup" (which is actually whiskey) in their coffee and drunkenly dancing on the tables.
Speaking to People, Acheson explained that he was initially brought in to say one line, but it soon turned into "the weirdest day" on set.

"I called my agent and he said, 'Listen, they would like you to come and do one line with Will Ferrell. Would you like to do it?' And I said, 'Yeah, I'd be happy to do that'. I was only supposed to say 'work release' and that was the end of it," he said.

However, director Jon Favreau wanted Acheson and Ferrell to improvise on the day, which later became one of the film's most memorable scenes, featuring an iconic line.
As an intoxicated Buddy exchanges banter with his new friend, Acheson's character reveals that he's 26 years old and has got "nothing to show for it".
"You're young, you're so young," Buddy then tells the mail worker.

Producers wanted to cut the improvised scene, as Acheson was 46 years old at the time, so they felt the joke wouldn't land with viewers.
"The producers wanted to axe the whole scene because of that. I think, 'Who is gonna believe this guy is 26?' I mean, seriously," Acheson explained.
"I believe I was 46 at the time and an older 46, even at that. Because I never looked young in my life.
"Jon Favreau fought for it. He said that the joke, that's the funny part, right? He kept me in but they, they didn't want me but he did and thank God for me because it changed my career quite a bit."

The line continues to be a hit with fans, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) this festive season to share their amusement.
"The guy in the mailroom in Elf saying he's 26 years old gets me every time," one person wrote.
"Now more than ever I relate to the Elf mailroom guy who is inexplicably 26 years old," another added, while a third said: "I cackle every time I watch this scene from Elf because this man is supposedly 26 years old."
Elf is now available to watch on Sky Cinema and NOW.
