Netflix has released the trailer for new movie Will & Harper ahead of its release in cinemas next week.

Josh Greenbaum's documentary follows Will Ferrell on a road trip with his friend Harper Steele who came out to him as a trans woman after nearly 30 years of friendship, with the duo meeting on Will's first day at Saturday Night Live in 1995.

Will & Harper sees the two drive from New York to Los Angeles over the course of 16 days as they process this new stage of their friendship, as well as reintroducing Harper to the country that she loves.

The documentary sees them visit stops that are meaningful to them, to their friendship and to America, with the pair pushing past their comfort zones as they re-examine their relationships to these spaces and to each other.

The movie premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and currently holds a flawless 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from its first 21 reviews.

Check out some of the early praise for Will & Harper below:

Variety

"It can sound like a cliché to say that any given movie is what the world needs now, but Will & Harper earns that distinction. Struggling to recognise her own beauty in a society that often seems determined to deny her identity altogether, Steele brings the trans experience down to earth."

The Guardian

"Will & Harper is best when it feels and looks smaller, the intimate story of two friends trying to navigate their way through something together without the assurance of a Hollywood ending."

Vanity Fair

"The film's greatest strength is the way it grants access to a topic many are deliberately ignorant about. Ideally, Will & Harper will invite in the people who most need to hear Steele's testimony."

Screen International

"While Will and Harper's friendship gives the film its strongly beating heart, the casual reactions of strangers often also prove to be moving."

Will & Harper is released in select cinemas on September 13 and on Netflix on September 27.
