Wicked movie director Jon M Chu has explained why some elements of The Wizard of Oz prequel don't match up.
The film tells the story of how multiple characters from Dorothy Gale's iconic adventure in Oz came to be the way they are, but for those whose only reference point is the 1939 film, some things don't make sense.
Speaking to Variety, the filmmaker explained why the ruby slippers aren't ruby and why the Yellow Brick Road doesn't look the same as the Judy Garland classic, stating that they stuck to the original rather than the most famous portrayals due to rights reasons.

"We had boundaries of what we could reference or not," he said.
"We never use the ruby slippers. Nessa has on crystal slippers as in the L Frank Baum book [The Wizard of Oz], Gregory Maguire book [Wicked] and the [stage] show.

"I don't think the phrase 'yellow brick road' is copywritten, but definitely the shape of the road is. We couldn't do the spiral. We had to do a circle that continues to show it's not where the road ends."
Speaking of Dorothy, Chu touched upon whether she will appear in the second film (which adapts the second act of the stage show).

"In the show, Dorothy is around," he said. "They have to intersect, and you can only tease it so much.
"I won't say whether she's a character, necessarily, in movie two. There's a part of me that wants everyone's Dorothy to be the whatever Dorothy they want. And yet, there is interaction and some crossover. So I'll leave that up to Part Two."
Wicked is out now in cinemas.
