Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's director James Mangold has responded to the movie's negative first reviews.

The latest instalment in the action series premiered at Cannes back in May, though didn't get the strongest reception from critics, earning the lowest-scoring Rotten Tomatoes rating in the franchise at 49% – it has since improved to 61%, though still remains the lowest.

Speaking to Variety about the critical consensus, Mangold suggested he wasn't hugely shocked by how it went down with reviewers.

“When you’re in franchise land, it’s very hard for critical thinkers to overlook what I’m sure their editors want, which is this business prism of how does it rate to the other ones?

“I always thought if I were second or third best to one of the greatest films of all time, I’d be good. I mean, it all vaporises later. Either the movie will live or it won’t.”

In Digital Spy's three-star review, we said: "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny might not feel particularly innovative, but it is well-made blockbuster entertainment that will deliver what Indiana Jones fans want. And, sometimes, that's good enough."

Meanwhile, star Harrison Ford recently spoke to DS about how he felt on his final day on the movie's set, recalling: "The feeling I had is the feeling you have when you've made something, and you can look at it, or you can remember having made it, [and having] the satisfaction of putting work in, and getting something worthy out of it.

"I felt a sense of peace, a sense of contentment, that this particular job that [James Mangold] and I and all the other people involved had done together, was concluded in a way that really felt satisfying to me. It is my hope that others find it as satisfying as I did."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released in UK cinemas on June 28 and in US cinemas on June 30.
