Stranger Things' Shawn Levy is in talks to step behind the camera for an upcoming Star Wars film.

The producer and director of Netflix's popular sci-fi series could soon be confirmed at the helm of a new film in the franchise, but not before he completes Deadpool 3 (via Deadline).

The hotly-anticipated third outing in Ryan Reynolds' Merc with a Mouth saga will see Wade Wilson and Wolverine (played once again by Hugh Jackman) team up, as well as marking Deadpool's official MCU debut.

Levy's Star Wars film will be part of a slate bringing new directors on board, including Thor: Love and Thunder's Taika Waititi and Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins. A newly announced movie will also be penned by Watchmen's Damien Lindelof and is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Levy will next produce and direct a four-part series at Netflix titled All the Light We Cannot See. He will also return behind the camera for the fifth and final instalment of Stranger Things, of which he is set to direct two episodes. Alongside his directing duties, he will continue producing the Duffer Brothers' series under his 21 Laps banner.

Deadpool 3 won't be Levy's first collaboration with Reynolds, as the filmmaker has previously directed the star in Free Guy, also starring Killing Eve's Jodie Comer and Stranger Things alum Joe Keery.

The script for the threequel, whose plot details are being kept under wraps, was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who previously discussed the rowdy superhero won't be sanitised in his first Disney-produced film.

"We were used to doing things our way, so there are differences, but I think the great part is that Marvel's been incredibly supportive," Reese told The Playlist earlier this year.

"They are gonna let Deadpool be Deadpool, you know? It's not like any particular joke may be the one that they say: 'You know, that's too far,' that could happen, but to this point, it's been nothing but support."

Deadpool and Deadpool 2 are streaming on Disney+, and also available on digital download, DVD and Blu-ray. Deadpool 3, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has a release date of September 6, 2024.
