Best Picture winner CODA is available to watch on Apple TV+

CODA has made history as the first streaming movie to win Best Picture at the Oscars, something no Netflix movie has managed to do.

The film follows the 17-year-old Ruby, who is the only hearing member of a deaf family (hence the title, CODA, which stands for children of deaf adults). She lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts and works mornings before school to help her family's fishing business stay afloat.

However, after joining her school's choir club she is drawn to the possibility of pursuing singing, as well as a budding relationship with her duet partner. As tension develops between her feelings of duty to her family and her newfound desire to sing, Ruby must learn how to forge ahead.

How to watch CODA online

CODA is available to watch on Apple TV+, which also houses hit shows like Severance, Ted Lasso, and more. There are a variety of ways to get an Apple TV Plus subscription if you don't already have one.

Firstly, you can just sign up! It's £4.99 per month, and you get a seven-day free trial (just remember to cancel before your payment is taken if you don't want to continue your subscription). You automatically get three months free when you buy a new Apple device (provided you activate the offer within 90 days of purchase).

There's also Apple One, a bundle that includes News+, Music, Arcade, iCloud+, Fitness, and TV+ and you get one month free (again, remember to cancel that subscription if you don't want to be charged!). There are a variety of plans to choose from.

CODA is, in fact, a remake of the French film La Famille Bélier, and is a French-English co-production, with many of those involved with La Famille Bélier also working on CODA.

One of the original film's producers, along with producer Patrick Wachsberger, approached Sian Heder to direct a remake that Heder said should be "unique and take the premise from the original and also reinvent it" (via ParkRecord).

Like any film that centres on the experiences of a marginalised group, there were mixed reactions. And then of course, as with any film whatsoever, there were mixed reactions.

What is abundantly clear, though, is that those in charge of nominating and voting for these kinds of accolades absolutely loved the film, and the wins the cast have had have been rightfully groundbreaking and long overdue.
