The Rise of Skywalker is longest Star Wars film ever as runtime is revealed

Hot on the heels of the arrival of the final trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and with cinema tickets now officially on sale, we now also know how long the final film in the Skywalker Saga will be.

Beating Rian Johnson's 2017 instalment The Last Jedi by three minutes, AMC Cinemas in the US has revealed that Rise of Skywalker has a runtime of a whopping 155 minutes, making it the longest Star Wars movie ever.

It doesn't quite reach the bum-numbing three-and-a-half-hour length of Martin Scorsese's The Irishman – but damn, that's pretty long.

In case you were wondering how the rest of the Star Wars franchise stacks up, in third spot comes Attack of the Clones (142 mins), which is then followed by Revenge of the Sith (140), The Force Awakens (138) and The Phantom Menace (136).

Then comes Solo: A Star Wars Story (135), anthology film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (133), Return of the Jedi (131), The Empire Strikes Back (124) and, finally, A New Hope (121).

Meanwhile, The Rise of Skywalker's final trailer has sent fans into a delirium after some of the footage teased the characters' return to Emperor Palpatine's iconic throne room from Return of the Jedi.

The trailer also featured C-3PO saying goodbye to all of his friends, leading to a heartbreaking fan theory as to why.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has a release date of Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
