Updated story: Konami has confirmed that survival horror reboot Silent Hills is no longer in the works.

In a statement, the publisher said development on the upcoming horror reboot - which was described as being in an "embryonic" stage - will not be pursued.

"Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic Silent Hills project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued," said the firm.

The confirmation follows comments from co-creator Guillermo del Toro that the game was "not gonna happen", as well as Konami letting the contract of The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus, who was to star in the game, expire.

Original story: It appears that Konami has cancelled its upcoming horror reboot Silent Hills, according to co-creators and sources close to the project.

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro, who was working on the game with Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, told an audience at a film festival in San Francisco that the game is "not gonna happen", a comment backed up by his assistant on Twitter.

Meanwhile The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus, who was to star in the game, said he was "super bummed" about the reports of the game's cancellation.

Super bummed about this was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it'll come back around. Sorry everyone http://t.co/drZJ8tBsSN

Elsewhere, a source close to the project told Polygon that the game is "pretty much dead".

While Konami has yet to officially comment on the game's status, in a prepared Q&A sent to Digital Spy it said had removed the image of Norman Reedus from the official website "because our contract period with him has expired".

It added that the publisher "will continue to develop the Silent Hill series".

Over the weekend, Konami announced it is removing PT - the free playable teaser for Silent Hills released last year - from the PS4 download store this week.

The move comes after several months of reports that Kojima would be leaving Konami later this year following a "power struggle" with upper management.

Konami is currently hiring for a new Metal Gear game, while Kojima has confirmed he will continue to be involved in Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain's development up until its release this September.

Kojima's name has been removed from Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain promotional art, as well as Silent Hills and Zone of the Enders HD Collection websites.
