Producer Grant Rodiek told VG247 that the upcoming release will be an "offline, client-based game".

He added that The Sims 4 is currently only planned for PC and Mac.

Maxis was heavily criticised for the DRM features of SimCity, which arrived earlier in the year.

The game featured a 20-minute timer which would shut the game off if the internet connection was lost.

Unveiled during Electronic Arts' gamescom press conference this week, the latest Sims sequel introduces emotionally aware beings, whose actions and choices are affected by their emotional states.

Users will have the ability to fully customise their Sims, from their appearance to the way they walk.

New actions and choices will be unlocked depending on previous interactions. Failing to successfully flirt with a character, for example, will impact future interactions.
