Replacing outgoing game Iron Brigade, it will be followed by Shoot Many Robots from December 16 until the end of the month.

Previous Games with Gold titles include Crackdown, Defence Grid: The Awakening, Assassin's Creed 2 and Fable 3.

The reward scheme was recently announced as a permanent feature for Xbox 360.

It offers free downloads to Gold subscribers, similar to PlayStation Plus, although users are able to access games even when subscriptions end or expire.

Microsoft also announced plans to continue the service on Xbox One, although it is currently finalising the terms of the offer.

The original Gears of War made its Xbox 360 debut in 2006.

It has spawned numerous sequels and spinoffs, including this year's Gears of War: Judgment.

Earlier this year, Microsoft executive Phil Spencer said that Gears of War needs to be reimagined for the Xbox One.
