Cold War-themed programme The Americans was named Best Drama Series at the culmination of the ceremony, and HBO's Silicon Valley won Best Comedy Series earlier in the night.
The stars of hit freshman shows - Bob Odenkirk of Better Call Saul and Taraji P Henson of Empire - walked away with the top two drama acting awards.
"I'm in a drama? I'm trying to get laughs," Odenkirk joked as he gripped his trophy. "The reason I'm up here is because [Better Call Saul creators] Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould got drunk one day - and Sony made them sign a contract."

Charlize Theron presented her A Million Ways to Die in the West co-star Seth MacFarlane with the Critics' Choice Louis XIII Genius Award, taking time to remind viewers that MacFarlane is single.
"I don't know what I did to deserve such an amazing, talented, fantastic friend," MacFarlane told Theron. "I don't know why you even agreed to do this for me."
MacFarlane then quipped: "The word genius gets thrown around lot - which is good because otherwise I probably wouldn't be getting this... Let's not forget that I'm being declared a genius on the network [A+E] that airs Duck Dynasty."
This year's most-nominated show Olive Kitteridge won Best Limited Series, on top of Frances McDormand and Bill Murray respectively being named Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
The Walking Dead capped off the night by becoming the Most Bingeworthy Show, besting Empire and Game of Thrones, among others.
