It's official! Big Little Lies will return for a second season.
After months of speculation about the Primetime Emmy Award-winning miniseries's future, HBO has confirmed that Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will return to produce and star in more episodes.
"I'm excited to announce the return of Big Little Lies," HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in a statement to TVLine. "[Writer] David Kelley wrote beautiful scripts and Reese and Nicole were, once again, a force to be reckoned with, reuniting the cast and recruiting the talented Andrea Arnold to direct.
"We look forward to working with this amazing group of artists."
Shailene Woodley has not yet officially signed on to reunite with Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies' second season, but HBO says that "most of the cast is expected to return, and negotiations are underway".
Woodley recently expressed interest in making more of Big Little Lies, in order to explore the mindset of character Jane Chapman in the aftermath of the first season's bloody finale.

"I think there's an assumption that these things are quick to heal once you begin therapy or once you have that closure," she explained. "But these are lifelong pains that you're constantly working through."
One key member of the team who won't be returning for the seven new episodes is director Jean-Marc Vallée, whose schedule has made involvement in a second season impossible.
Big Little Lies' second season will instead be directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrea Arnold. Her impressive CV includes the 2011 film version of Wuthering Heights and two of Amazon's critically-acclaimed hits, I Love Dick and Transparent.
