Even before Ryan Murphy's latest American Crime Story season had landed, the family of Gianni Versace had described it as a "work of fiction", with Murphy responding by backing the author of the book it is based on. But as we wait to see how accurate the performances are, how much do the major characters resemble their real-life versions?

The legendary Italian fashion designer, who founded luxury fashion house Versace, was shot and killed by Andrew Cunanan outside his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997.

Spree killer Andrew Cunanan murdered five people in 1997, including Gianni Versace. Eight days after killing Versace, Cunanan died by suicide on a houseboat in Miami.
Penelope Cruz as Donatella Versace
Gianni's sister Donatella Versace became the new head of design at Versace following his murder, and is currently chief designer and vice president of the Versace Group. Her daughter Allegra was left 50% of the fashion empire by Gianni in his will, while Donatella's son Daniel inherited Gianni's artwork collection.

Gianni Versace was in a relationship with Italian model Antonio D'Amico until Versace's murder. The pair met in 1982 and D'Amico worked as a designer for the company.

The former lover of Andrew Cucanan became his second victim, his body discovered on May 3, 1997 with gunshot wounds.

Andrew Cunanan's third victim was real-estate developer Lee Miglin ,who was found dead in the garage of his home.
