The star will play Lord Harwood – described as an upper-class English gentleman who is "cultured, urbane, brilliant and supremely sure of himself" (via Deadline) – in the series about the younger years of Bruce Wayne's Butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon).

However, he also holds a "sadistic, cruel nature [with] a veneer of charm", which will no doubt challenge young Pennyworth.

The character appears to be an original creation for the 10-part series rather than one from the original DC comics.

Pennyworth will focus on the character in his 20s in the years after leaving the SAS in the 1960s, where he accepts a security job with Batman's father Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge).

Alongside Bannon, Aldridge and now Flemyng, the show has also cast singer Paloma Faith as a "spirited, sadistic and sharp-tongued villain".

Pennyworth comes from the same writing team as Gotham, though they have insisted that there will be no link between the shows.

Production on Pennyworth gets underway on October 22 at Warner Bros Studios in the UK. A premiere date has yet to be confirmed.
