Fans of the 2012-2013 show Smash aren't too happy with one of its former stars, Katharine McPhee, after she shared a tweet that's been interpreted as throwing shade at the series.

McPhee's post takes on the meme of the moment, the "if you don't love me at my... then you don't deserve me at my..." one – and as is the norm with memes and social media in general, it's been taken in different ways.

The tweet uses a shot of McPhee in Smash for the 'worst' picture, next to a shot of her in her current Broadway production Waitress as the 'best' picture.

McPhee starred in Smash as Karen Cartwright from 2012 to 2013, with the much-hyped NBC show lasting just two seasons – but despite its disappointing viewing figures back then, the show still appears to have some devout fans behind it.

"Why is she acting like Smash is bad?" one fan commented, with another replying: "I know like how rude."

"Ummmm Karen Cartwright deserves better," another wrote, while a fourth said: "I'm sorry how is smash the lesser option here."

Others, though, wanted to see the best in the tweet, suggesting that McPhee wasn't trying to slate the show.

"I loved , I think this means if you did not appreciate her in a show that was Amazing but got cancelled then you don't deserve her in a world renowned Broadway show! PS, this is deep for a meme!" one tweeted.

Another defended her by writing: "I think it's clear that it's for all her Smash haters, she's like 'if you thought I was bad there (and I wasn't) you don't deserve me now'."

Katharine McPhee makes her Broadway debut as Jenna in Waitress from today (April 10).
