The fate of The X-Files might not have been sealed by Gillian Anderson after all.
It's looked increasingly likely in recent weeks that the current 11th season of the science fiction series would be its last, following Gillian's announcement that she will be walking away from the show.
There was even a nod towards a definitive end in last week's season opener, but David Duchovny has now suggested that there may be a future for The X-Files without Gillian Anderson.
At the TCA press tour on Wednesday (January 10), Duchovny said he'd be "good either way" if The X-Files ended now or went on in some new format (via The Hollywood Reporter).
"I've tried to say goodbye to Fox Mulder many times and I failed," he joked. "And they all went and did the show without me, so how do you like that? I'm feeling pretty pissed off, now that I remember."
As he mentioned, it was Duchovny who walked away from the original X-Files — making only sporadic guest appearances in the final years.

Also at the TCAs, Gillian Anderson went into more detail than ever before about why the timing is right for her to say goodbye to Agent Scully for good.
"I wouldn't necessarily have been happy if those six [in 2016] were how we said goodbye," she explained. "There's lots of things that I want to do in my life and in my career and it's been an extraordinary opportunity and extraordinary character and I am hugely grateful."
The X-Files continues on Fox in the US and will air later in the year on Channel 5 in the UK.
