For those shipping the idea of Mulder and Scully getting intimate again on The X-Files, it looks like season 11 could make your wishes come true.

The show has hinted that the pair could be getting up to some bedroom action next season, with a very brief clip of them lying down together.

In a featurette on the cliffhanger at the end of season 10, series creator Chris Carter explains that there will be "a really interesting dramatic solution" to the events of the finale.

And in a succession of preview clips from the new episodes, there is a very brief shot of Mulder and Scully on a bed together – though, to be honest, it doesn't look very sexy.

Still, we'll take what we can.

David Duchovny previously teased to TVLine that there would be "definite intimations of hanky-panky" next season, so we will take his word for it.

Meanwhile, Carter recently addressed the criticism levelled at season 10 after many viewers were left disappointed by the revival.

"We [relaunched] from a standing start after not having been on the air for 12 years – there was some reacquainting that had to be achieved," he said.

"It was like old friends getting back together. We had to shake some of the stiffness out."

As for season 11, he reassured fans: "I think that we're all in fighting shape now."

The new season of The X-Files begins Wednesday, January 3 on Fox in the US, with the show due to air on Channel 5 in the UK in 2018.
