The X-Files did not enjoy the greatest of revivals when it returned for a long-awaited tenth season.

"A disjointed exercise in nostalgia," said Digital Spy's review of the premiere episode in January 2016. And although the season saw an upturn as it progressed, there were a lot of viewers who were a bit disappointed.

Chris Carter, creator of the sci-fi series, acknowledged that season ten wasn't without its problems, and addressed the criticism in a new interview.

"We [relaunched] from a standing start after not having been on the air for 12 years – there was some reacquainting that had to be achieved," he said (via TVLine).

"I think that we're all in fighting shape now," Carter said.

And that's great news, considering the new run of episodes is just around the corner, starting on Wednesday, January 3 in the US.

Meanwhile, the show will definitely return to the UK in 2018, with Channel 5 having confirmed the acquisition.

The new season will see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who will be scouring the country for their long-lost son William.

Anderson recently announced that season 11 would be her last.
