We want to believe that The X-Files' 11th season is going to be much better than last year's revival — and we don't have long to wait before we find out for sure.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will search for The Truth once again on US TV starting on Wednesday, January 3 at 8pm ET on Fox.

Channel 5 has also confirmed that it'll air the new season in the UK, though is yet to confirm an air-date beyond "2018".

The return of The X-Files will directly lead-in at 9pm ET to the debut of 9-1-1, American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy's new police procedural starring his frequent collaborators Angela Bassett and Connie Britton.

Fox's continuing adventures of Mulder and Scully will centre on the FBI agents scouring the country for their long-lost son William, who may be crucial in stopping an invasion of alien colonists once and for all.

What to Read Next

Series co-creator Chris Carter is bringing back some familiar faces to cross paths with the duo throughout their investigations, including the devious Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), his reluctant ally Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish) and FBI Assistant Director Skinner (Mitch Pileggi).

This latest revival is expected to be the last for Gillian Anderson, who recently announced that she'll be retiring as Dana Scully at the end of this season.

The overall arc will apparently move away from heavily featuring the alien mythology, instead using it as a touchstone weaved into otherwise standalone, Monster-of-the-Week episodes.

"We start the season right up from where the season finale left off with that big helicopter and takes you right from there," former Fox boss David Madden explained. "You'll be launched into a very urgent adventure that has a lot to do with William — Mulder and Scully's kid.

"So, the search for William will be a significant thread through the show. You will see the Cigarette Smoking Man. You may see The Lone Gunmen somewhere along the line. There will be other characters from the previous mythology that will be reprised."
