This first-look at The X-Files season 11 doesn't exactly solve that deeply disturbing season 10 cliffhanger.

Last time we saw Scully (Gillian Anderson), she was on a gridlocked bridge trying to cure Mulder (David Duchovny) from that alien virus, but this first image from the new season sees Scully on death's door instead.

So what gives? "Obviously something unexpected has happened," series creator Chris Carter teased to EW, who promised he planned this reversal before the cliffhanger. "Everything is by design."

Carter added that after the first episode, which delves into Cigarette Smoking Man's (William B Davis) backstory, there will be a time jump at the start of the second episode.

Season 11 will also explore that shocker from last season where Agent Reyes (Annabeth Gish) confessed she was allies with the Cigarette Smoking Man as "familiar alliances are rattled".
