WARNING: This article contains major US-pace spoilers for the last episode of Penny Dreadful season 3 - proceed with caution!
Penny Dreadful stunned its fans last night (June 19) with a double twist, killing off a major character... and perhaps the entire show.
What to Read Next
Eva Green's Vanessa Ives met her end in third season finale 'The Blessed Dark' - shot dead by the man who loved her, Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett).
Her demise thwarted Dracula (Christian Camargo), who'd been on a season-long campaign to seduce Vanessa and make her his bride.
And as if that wasn't shocking enough, the episode ended with a title card which read 'THE END' - but is this simply the climax of Vanessa's story, or the end of Penny Dreadful?
Fans of the gothic series on Twitter were not shy in expressing how they felt about Vanessa's demise - and the possibility that their favourite show just got canned:
So... is this the end? Billie Piper - who plays Lily - previously told Digital Spy that the show's future was uncertain beyond its current run of episodes.
"Beyond the season we've just shot, I'm not entirely sure what will happen - and I think maybe they're working it out themselves," she said of series creator John Logan and his team.
All that and Penny Dreadful is yet to be officially renewed for a fourth season by Showtime. Dark times ahead?
