Game of Thrones continues to throw up surprises and shocks as we enter into its third episode away from the confines of George RR Martin's novels.

It might not have been as explosive as the first two instalments, but here are the biggest things that made us go 'huh?', 'nooo', or 'bloody hell!' in 'Oathbreaker':

1. JON SNOW IS STILL ALIVE

Don't worry, it wasn't a red herring. They didn't annoy us all by leaving Jon Snow's story for a week, either. Ser Davos, Edd, the Wildlings and pretty much everyone were as shocked as we were to see the godlike Jon Snow arise from the dead.

Everyone assumed that it was the Red Woman's magic that brought him back to life, but Jon said that he remembers nothing after being knifed to death. Melisandre also told him that she now believes that he is the "prince that was promised" rather than Stannis.

To get his own back, Jon then carried out the hangings of Ser Alliser, Othell Yarwyck, Bowen Marsh, and most heartbreakingly of all, Olly. What a horrible life that little kid had. But that's what you get, mate. Jon then proceeded to give his cloak to Edd, stating that his time with the Watch had ended, as his 'death' freed him of all ties.

2. WAS NED STARK A LIAR?

In this week's Lost-style flashback courtesy of Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven, we saw a young Eddard, Lord Howland Reed and other soldiers arrive at the Tower of Joy in Dorne's Red Mountains following Robert's Rebellion (proper book stuff).

The fearsome Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Oswell Whent greeted Ned as he stated that Prince Rhaegar and the Mad King had been killed. After Ned demanded to know where his sister was, everything kicked off. Dayne struck down many soldiers including Howland, as Bran was confused to see why Dayne was winning - considering all the tales Ned told of how he won the fight.

However, Howland stabbed Dayne in the back, before a weaponless and beaten Ned killed him off. A woman's scream was heard from the tower, and Ned and Howland rushed inside - and Ned appeared to hear Bran's calls for him to stay. Annoyingly, the Three-Eyed Raven pulled Bran away before he could see more. Dammit!

3. YOU DON'T MESS WITH VARYS

The eunuch summoned Vala, a woman with the Sons of the Harpy in the throne room, accusing her of conspiring to kill all the Unsullied and Second Sons. He mentioned her son Dhom as a way of getting her to talk, and he learned that the slave masters of Yunkai, Astapor and Volantis have been financing the Sons of the Harpy. Tyrion suggested they hunt down the Sons of the Harpy one by one.

Meanwhile, Dany is still in a tight spot. She arrived with Khal Moro's khalasar at Vaes Dothrak, and met with the Dosh Khaleen by Moro's bloodriders. Looks like she may be stuck there for some time. Hurry up, Jorah!

4. ZOMBIE MOUNTAIN CAN UNDERSTAND YOU, SO DON'T BE A DICK

Jaime Lannister almost incurred the wrath of Ser Gregor after testing what he could and couldn't understand. He was also annoyed to discover that there are far too many of those religious dudes for the Mountain to take down on his own, but a one-on-one battle could do the trick.

After meeting creepy Qyburn's 'little birds' that he inherited from Varys - Cersei and Jaime interrupted a council meeting involving Lord Kevan Lannister, Lady Olenna Tyrell, Lord Mace Tyrell and Grand Maester Pycelle. Before anything can be discussed about the Sand Snakes' capture of Dorne, the council wussed off. But not before Gregor gave evils to Pycelle (how is he still around?).

Tommen actually showed some balls after marching to see the High Sparrow, only for him to get talked down from his rage after hearing an explanation of the importance of the Mother in the Faith of the Seven, and seeing a resemblance to his mother. Don't fall for it, Tommen.

5. ARYA CAN SEE AGAIN

Thank heavens for that. Arya had a classic training montage with the Waif in the House of Black and White. She also revealed that she had taken The Hound off her kill list, and that the other names on the list were Cersei Lannister, Gregor Clegane and Walder Frey.

After being able to parry the hits of the stick, Jaqen returned to offer her sight back if she said her name. Replying "a girl is no-one", she drank from the well and had her sight restored. Hurray! Now, back to that list...

6. RICKON IS BACK - AND HE'S SCREWED

And Ramsay is still being an insufferable douche. A very sweary (even for GoTSmalljon Umber met with Ramsay and Herald Karstark, explaining that Jon Snow had been letting the Wildlings through the wall, and was concerned that they will keep heading south.

Ramsay offered his assistance if they swear to him as Warden of the North. After declining this offer of being Ramsay's bitch, Smalljon brings out Rickon Stark and Osha as gifts. To make matters worse, Smalljon proves it is Rickon by producing the head of the boy's direwolf Shaggydog. Noooooo!

Smalljon's appearance is particularly upsetting as this means he has well and truly betrayed the Starks. His father was Greatjon Umber, the fierce leader from season one who was loyal to Robb Stark, even after his direwolf chewed off TWO OF HIS FINGERS.

7. JON SNOW HAS A SMALL PENIS

Just so you're aware.
